Art Doll Quarterly Challenges

Superheros to the Rescue!
Superheros have super-abilities and powers and act heroically. They're brave and self-sacrificing. Whether able to leap tall buildings in a single bound or a courageous beautiful princess who's a fierce warrior … there are many ways to interpret your favorite hero. From Superman to Wonder Woman, Buffy to Lora Croft, Spider-Man to Aquaman … we want to see your superhero art dolls! Your superhero doesn't necessarily have to come from the pages of a comic book or out of Hollywood though ... maybe your superhero is your mom or a brave firefighter from Ground Zero. Thanks to artist Trish Draper for suggesting this challenge theme! Results will be published in our Autumn 2015 issue.

Deadline: March 15, 2015

The Dance
Everyone has a different interpretation of the word "dance," and given the bevy of dance shows on TV we know that dancing is a popular subject. There are as many ways to construe dancing as there are salsa songs! With absolutely no shortage of ideas … Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, the romantic Giselle, the classical Swan Lake, Patrick Swayze and Jenifer Grey, hip-hop, jazz, the tango … we know you'll have fun with this challenge. So put on some music, dance a little jig and get moving! There are no hard and fast rules. Simply take a spin with your muse and show us how you can translate "The Dance" into an art doll. Results will be published in our Winter 2015 issue.
Deadline: June 15, 2015.

Fairy Tale Dolls
Once upon a time, stories were written that included princesses, dwarves, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, magic, and more. They were passed on through the years and became known as fairy tales. From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Ugly Duckling, Robin Hood to Tom Thumb, Cinderella to Rumpelstiltskin, there should be no lack of inspiration for this challenge! Simply create a doll based on a character in a fairytale using your medium of choice. You can choose a well-known tale or one that’s more obscure — the choice is yours. Have fun with this challenge. We’re anxious to see what you come up with. And so the story goes … Results will be published in our Spring 2016 issue.
Deadline: September 15, 2015.

Paper Personas
Inspired by Judith Thibaut's doll "George in Drag" (Spring 2010) and in the spirit of Lynne Perrella's book Beyond Paper Dolls, we've created a new department in Art Doll Quarterly that will feature one fabulous, artistic and beautifully executed paper doll in each issue. We're looking for expressive paper personas crafted with innovative techniques and art mediums -- over-the-top imaginative interpretations of the human form. Send us your thought-provoking and innovative paper personas for publication consideration. Please note "Paper Personas" on your submission.
